Company History

Friedman’s Ltd was established in 1962 as a wholesale trader of general household fabrics. Its sister company Bacher Fabrics, which operated a retail operation in Manchester, eventually became the larger concern of the two companies and Friedman’s stopped its operations as a trading company.

However, when the third generation of family came to the helm of Bacher Fabrics in 1989, David Kaitiff, the newest director of the company aged just 21, saw opportunities in restarting the wholesale business concentrating on stretch fabrics. He acquired the total shareholding of Friedman's Ltd, and set about revolutionising the stretch fabric business within the UK.

An established and reliable business

Starting with just three rolls of black nylon Lycra and a small but loyal set of customers who supported David’s ideas, the company grew rapidly.

Once established as a reliable and competitive business, the next set of ideas were implemented: to start offering foil-embellished fabrics and printed nylon lycras.

Again the idea proved successful and it soon became obvious that instead of importing these new products, it made sense to produce them in-house.

Becoming a well-known industry presence

Once fluent with the intricacies of these producing these new products, growth accelerated rapidly, as all manner of household names, such as M&S, BHS and Sainsbury's, came to Friedman's for their swimwear and fashion fabrics.

The company had grown to a level where, for its long-term health, a broader management structure was required, and in January 2005 the company was sold to Ceps PLC. Retaining David Kaitiff as the MD, the company now had renewed momentum to move in the global theatre of business.

New premises, new presence

New premises, updated machinery, and a capacity to expand its operations followed soon after.

In 2007, Friedman's sought to gain a presence back in the retail market and the acquisition of funkifabrics has allowed it to show in all its glory the fabulous range of stretch fabric products to the end user.

The latest chapter in this remarkable story is the advent of Friedman's digital solutions within its printing processes. Our design team are constantly releasing new prints and can also deal with bespoke work supplied by the client. The journey from humble beginnings for this company is one that continues, and we welcome you to travel it with us.
